T-3 Days

29 January 2011

Eggsellent writer’s group meeting today with the lovely Ashley, Rachel, Miriam, and Adam. We decided that for our next meeting we are all going to re-write Poe’s Tell-Tale Heart, which I hope to get a jump on this weekend, otherwise I’ll have to write that during novel month as well – eek!

Today is outline day, and Monday will probably be finalize outline day.  I also had some great conversation last night with the lovely Geoff about his dream research.  There are apparently a couple theories on the purpose of dreams, why our body makes us go on these adventures while we are unconscious.  One thought is that it is connected to what the body needs–if a particular muscle, in the leg or the shoulder or anywhere, is in pain, even if we can’t detect, we may dream about that muscle and working with that muscle, maybe even resulting in the small spasms that sometimes happen in sleep.  Another theory is that the mind wants to prepare for situations that may happen, testing out possible scenarios to see how we would react.  This is why we may find ourselves acting out our fears in dreams, so we can be prepared for what we would do when giant bees actually do chase us to the edge of a precipice (my earliest remembered dream).  Maybe we wouldn’t be as inadequate as we thought we would.  Maybe this is why people have premonitions in their dreams.

Anyway, it’s hard for me to know what of that came out of Geoff’s research, Geoff’s head, or my head, but it’s fun to think about.  I think at this point, as February 2 quickly approaches, it is best to do minor, fact-based research for now, trust Geoff to delve into the cool stuff, and then sort it out afterwards.  I’m sure plenty more will go in during revision.  This is about getting down the skeleton of the piece.
